Permanent Eyeliner

Permanent eyeliner is possible through a procedure called micropigmentation. This technique involves the embedding of an organic pigment beneath the skin to add permanent color. The treatment involves the use of a hand-held device that punctures the skin hundreds of times per minute with a very thin needle and pushes the pigment into the desired location. A permanent eyeliner procedure can be performed in your specialist's office office. Local anaesthesia is applied before the treatment, making the whole process painless; if anaesthesia isn't used, the procedure can be very uncomfortable. The color is places along the lower and upper eyelash border (between eyelashes) giving you the appearance of having a fuller and darker lash, creating a soft halo around the eyes. Immediately afterwards, your eyelids will be slightly red and puffy, especially around the tattooed region. You may also experience some swelling, which usually varies from patient to patient. Generally, everyone leaves the clinic looking as if though they have just been crying. The swelling will persist for 2 to 5 days but it will disappear after that.

Your permanent make-up will have a darker and thicker appearance during the first few days but as the region heals, you will notice some of the color flaking off (scabs). This usually happens during the first week.

The following are the primary complications that can result from a permanent eyeliner procedure:

• Infection - If the equipment isn't sterilized, infectious diseases can be transmitted.
• Removal problems - Despite advances in laser technology, removing a tattoo is a painstaking process, usually involving several treatments and considerable expense. Complete removal without scarring may be impossible. "
• Allergic reactions - Although FDA has received reports of numerous adverse reactions associated with certain shades of ink in permanent makeup, marketed by a particular manufacturer, reports of allergic reactions to tattoo pigments have been rare. However, when they happen they may be particularly troublesome because the pigments can be hard to remove. Occasionally, people may develop an allergic reaction to tattoos they have had for years.
• Granulomas - These are nodules that may form around material that the body perceives as foreign, such as particles of tattoo pigment.
• Keloid formation - If you are prone to developing keloids (scar tissues that grow beyond normal boundaries) you are at risk of keloid formation from a tattoo.
